Describe what the pile is made of

“Debris” can mean a loose pile of branches, a stack of deck boards, old cabinets, or heavy chunks of concrete. Those materials do not have the same weight or handling needs, even if the piles look similar in a photo.

List the main materials when requesting pickup. Identify dense items separately, and say whether they are loose, bagged, stacked, or mixed together. If there is material hidden beneath the visible pile, include it in the description.

For branches and plant trimmings, start with yard waste removal. For wood, metal, drywall, and remodeling material, use construction debris removal. A combined job can still be reviewed in one conversation when the parts are clear.

Building materials should be identified separately from fresh plant debris.

Keep different materials identifiable

Avoid mixing household trash into a branch pile or hiding electronics in a bag of demolition waste. If you know material has special handling needs, tell the hauling team before it is loaded. If you do not know what something is, say that too.

A fence or deck pile can contain coatings, fasteners, composite material, and concrete attached to posts. Explain those details instead of simply describing it as wood. Zero Waste Sonoma publishes county disposal information that can help you check local material handling options.

You do not need to pull apart a sharp or unstable pile for a better picture. Photograph what is visible, describe the rest, and ask what preparation is useful before doing extra work.

Show the full route to the trailer

Take one wide photo that shows the pile in relation to the property. Then photograph the gate, steps, or path the material must travel. Mention a slope, soft ground, or a long carry from the backyard.

Leave the material on your property or in an approved location. Do not block a public path, road, shared driveway, or emergency access while waiting for an appointment. For an active jobsite, coordinate loading with the other crews and deliveries.

If a structure is still standing, say so. Deck removal is different from loading the boards after someone else has dismantled it. The same distinction applies to sheds and fencing.

Agree on the finish point

Before work begins, identify reusable supplies, tools, and sections of the project that must stay. Clarify whether the request is only for a pile or also includes dismantling, posts, or other attached material.

For a deck debris pickup, call out long boards, hardware, and any dense pieces. For a yard cleanup, distinguish smaller brush from large logs, stumps, or soil. These details help the estimate match the work.
